Newsworthy Event - To me at least.
Dateline Mar. 18, 2004
My Mustang was stolen from the driveway of my house on a Saturday between the hours of 11:30 and 11:44 while I was asleep 10 feet away. (My neighbor, a fellow car enthusiast, heard it start up in front of his house and was able to pinpoint the time) This leads me to believe the involvement of an acquaintance as the method and time don't appear professional. It was passed on to a couple of guys who did this.

(Excerpted from Contra costa times article)

"When police caught up near 23rd Street and Broadway Avenue, the gray car had pulled lengthwise across lanes of traffic and the Mustang was spinning donuts in the intersection."

"... the occupants periodically taunted them with hand gestures, ..."

The CHP is supposed to be investigating the San Jose police stated.

Seems a funny kind of investigation as the investigator hasn't contacted the owner of the stolen car or visited the scene of the crime.

I suppose they consider the crime to be investigated the crash rather than the theft. This seems to me to be a hole in the system!

The Car in question: A 1965 fastback which had been modified with massive infusions of time and money.
Here's a shot of it during painting.

You can observe the bar behind the seats which retains the shoulder harness. They didn't steal that part and the driver who crashed it is plenty sorry now as he got a piece of steering wheel through his face at around 100 mph when they plowed into the Moterhome.

Here are some details of the more than 3 years of effort I put into the project. 351Proj

Unfortunately, The comprehensive was discontinued by the insurance co. "Pending new photo's" so it's a direct out of pocket loss and I don't think I have the resources now to do it again.

I'm REALLY bummed!

 -Roy.

Update May 4, 2004:
I finally heard from the CHP. The officer who called me had been at the academy for some classwork when I called.
I gave him the info about the brake problem on the car and he gave some info on the condition of the vehicle.
Apparently the rear glass is intact so it *may* be possible to rebuild the car!
I say this because it indicates the top/rear is not crushed. Not to say it would be easy! I figure I might be able to chop off the front and put a tube frame front end on it.

The bad news here is that indeed, SJPD IS responcible for follow-up, and they indicated they weren't planning to do so. (car is found, case closed)

In addition, word of mouth has it that no finger printing was done at the scene or later (probably). Which means they (whoever) got away with leaving handprints all over it when they pushed it down the street.

It's even worse than I thought!
The CHP sent a notice releasing the Mustang to the storage yard but failed to notify the DA's office or the owner.
I talked to someone in the Oakland CHP office who is the "Tow Officer".
He didn't sound like a CHP officer. Civilian employee? Don't know. He said "You ARE going to pay for the tow and at least 1 days storage"

I thanked him for the info and talked to the CHP (3 more offices), the Contra Costa District Attorneys investigator,  and the San Jose PD. Nobody knew what happened.

I also sought advice from an attorney. John Hinkle, of Hincle, Jachimowicz, Pointer & Mayron. He was very helpful and gave me some great 'free' advise, as well as a referal to an attorney in Contra Costa County who might be able to help. (I highly recommend this firm BTW, most of them are former police officers.)

I last called the Oakland CHP office, and by asking for the watch Commander, may have made some inroads. He is trying to determine who did what when.

Ok, it's home, see post below. I posted some pics on the ultimatecarpage
I also started a project page on Hotrodders.com
My page on the current state of the rebuild project is Here
All these folks have been very supportive.

So sorry about your car, nevertheless, the other pictures shows a relatively peacefull, happy and healthy person. Cheer up, it's only wasted steel. The main assets are still with you will give you force to build 100ds if not 1000ds of other cars.

You know where, Looks like you missed that one when you came to Europe - Wednesday, August 18, 2004 at 09:01:36 (CDT)
deleted Spam!

Sounds rough. If that had happened in Canada, the car would've been returned to the owner after a thorough investigation. Those guys would've had a rough time in prison trying to explain why they were dumb enough not to wear their harnesses at 100 mph.

Just for *grins* I checked the price of a Hewland transaxle. Factory wants around 8000 Brit. Pounds. AHAHAHAHA.

Humph. Got my baby back home.
Might salvage the back third.
Engines still good. The Griffin aluminum radiator cushioned the impact. Nice . The Cool-It Water pump is broken. No Damage to heads. Front destroyed through to the firewall. Windshield posts may be salvageable. Assume not, one option is cut in a coupe front end. (I'd  really like a rear engine anyway).
I think the basic platform was used for a variety of Ford racing platforms. I may turn it into something else.
Sometimes years go by between times I update myself on Racing Technology.
I will never forget my "Passed on friend", Bart Martin, He Drove the "Grizzly Torque Special" in '19forgotten'. He died at Candlestick Sunday, my friend Ken died on Saturday - sameplace -Kind of put a damper on my enthusiasm for racing for awhile!
Barts car was a Chevy powered  Brabham (I think - cant pull it up from the aging brain...) Fiberglass special. Rear Engine . I think They used Hewland Transaxles.
Kens car was a Merlin MarkIVA that I did some chassis work on when we put a 2 Liter Porsch Engine in.
How much are those suckers used.? Out of my price range for now for sure.
But yeah, basically, yeah, I'll put it back on the road. You'll see me tooling in the coolest places imaginable in hot Mustang again sometime! Any of you Babes the wanna get on the train, give me a call, LOL. (I told my friend Susi one time I was accepting applications for a companion for the European Tour in the Mustang. She said sure, next time I'm in Austria. LOL)  MeanRoy.

Roy gave me a ride in his monster before it was gone. I told him to put the hammer down and I still have whiplash, in several senses!
